How the companion voucher calculator works
The British Airways American Express 2-4-1 Companion Voucher — officially the “Companion Voucher” — is the single most valuable perk in UK travel rewards, but its worth swings wildly depending on how you redeem it. This calculator strips the guesswork out by turning your own booking figures into a clear pound value, so you can see at a glance whether a redemption is worth using your voucher on at all.
The maths is deliberately simple. You enter the Avios price for one adult and the taxes, fees and surcharges per person that BA quotes on the reward-flight results page. The calculator then works out how many Avios you save by using the voucher, and multiplies those saved Avios by the value you place on an Avios to give a pound figure. That figure is what the voucher is genuinely worth to you on this specific trip.
What “Avios saved” actually means
There are two ways to use the voucher, and the calculator handles both:
- Two of you together (the classic 2-4-1). Two passengers fly the same flight and cabin, but you only pay one person’s Avios. Without the voucher you’d need double the Avios; with it you pay half. So the Avios you save is exactly one adult’s reward price.
- Just you (a 50% discount). If you travel solo you can still use the voucher for a straight 50% reduction on the Avios needed — so you save half of one adult’s reward price.
In both cases you still pay the full taxes, fees and carrier-imposed surcharges for every passenger travelling — the voucher only ever discounts the Avios, never the cash. That is why the calculator shows the cash you’ll pay separately: on a long-haul Club World redemption those surcharges can run to several hundred pounds per person, and they are the number that decides whether a “free” reward flight is really worth it.
Why the cabin you choose changes everything
The voucher saves you a fixed number of Avios — and premium cabins cost far more Avios than economy, so the same voucher is worth several times more in Club World or First than it is in economy. A return economy short-haul might save you 20,000 Avios; a Club World long-haul redemption can save 150,000 or more. That is why frequent flyers hoard their voucher for a premium-cabin, long-haul trip.
There is one crucial catch built into which card you hold. The fee-free British Airways American Express earns a voucher that can only be used in economy, and it is valid for 12 months. The British Airways American Express Premium Plus (£300 a year) earns a voucher usable in any cabin — economy, premium economy, Club World and even First — and it is valid for a full 24 months. It also quietly unlocks extra reward-seat availability that non-voucher members never see. How we turn Avios into pounds
An Avios has no fixed cash price — its value depends entirely on what you redeem it for. As a rough guide, most UK collectors value an Avios at somewhere between 1.0p and 1.5p. Redeem for a cheap economy hop and you might get closer to 1p; redeem for a Club World or First seat that would otherwise cost thousands and you can comfortably exceed 2p. The calculator lets you set your own figure so the result reflects your redemptions, not an arbitrary industry average. If you’re unsure, leave it at the default 1.3p — a sensible middle estimate for a decent redemption.
Is the voucher worth the card’s annual fee?
The Premium Plus card costs £300 a year, so a fair question is whether a single voucher redemption justifies that fee. The calculator answers it directly: whenever your voucher value tops £300, it tells you how many times over it beats the fee. In practice a single long-haul premium-cabin 2-4-1 almost always covers the fee several times — and that is before you count the Avios you earn from everyday spending on the card, which is a separate benefit entirely.
A word of caution: the voucher is only earned after you spend £15,000 on the card in a membership year (this threshold rose from £10,000 on 1 November 2024, so ignore older guides quoting the lower figure). Factor that spending requirement into your own decision — the voucher is only “free” if you’d have put that spending on the card anyway.
Getting the most from your result
Run a few scenarios before you commit. Compare an economy short-haul against a Club World long-haul and you’ll see the pound value jump dramatically — a strong argument for saving your voucher rather than spending it on the first trip that comes up. Remember that reward seats are released up to 355 days ahead, that the outbound leg must be flown before the voucher expires, and that cancelling more than 24 hours before departure returns the voucher with its original expiry date rather than resetting the clock.
