BA Companion Voucher: How the 2-4-1 Works

1. What is the BA companion voucher (2-4-1)?

The British Airways companion voucher — universally known as the “2-4-1” — lets you bring a companion on a reward flight without paying a second set of Avios for their seat. You book two people in the same cabin on the same flights, but only the Avios cost for one person is deducted. Travelling alone? The same voucher instead gives you a flat 50% discount on the Avios for a solo booking.

It is the single most valuable perk in UK frequent-flyer land, and the main reason hundreds of thousands of Britons hold a British Airways American Express card. Used on a long-haul Club World (business class) redemption, one voucher can save a couple well over 100,000 Avios — comfortably worth four figures in cash terms.

2. How you earn a companion voucher

You earn a voucher by hitting an annual spending target on a British Airways American Express card. Since 1 November 2024 the threshold is £15,000 of card spend within your membership year on either card — the figure rose from the old £10,000 level, so older guides you may find elsewhere are out of date. The card you hold decides how good the voucher you earn is.

For anyone with premium-cabin ambitions, the Premium Plus card is the one that matters: its voucher works in Club World and First, lasts twice as long, and unlocks reward seats that non-voucher members simply cannot see.

3. How the voucher actually works

Once a voucher lands in your British Airways Club account, using it is straightforward — but there are firm rules worth knowing before you plan a trip around it.

• You must be travelling: The cardholder who earned the voucher has to be one of the two passengers. You cannot gift the flights to two other people.
• Same flights, same cabin: Both passengers travel together on identical flights in the same cabin. You cannot split cabins or routes.
• Reward availability required: The flight must have reward seats available for your dates — the voucher does not create seats out of thin air (except the extra Club World availability Premium Plus unlocks).
• Pay the cash portion on Amex: Taxes, fees and surcharges must be settled with an American Express card, though not necessarily the BA-branded one.

4. Two people free, or 50% off solo?

Every voucher can be used one of two ways, and it is worth understanding which gives you more. Bringing a companion effectively saves you a whole second passenger’s Avios; travelling solo halves the Avios for your single seat. In pure Avios terms the two options save an almost identical number of points — the difference is simply whether you are travelling with someone.

The takeaway: the voucher always saves you roughly one person’s worth of Avios. If you travel as a pair you get two seats for that saving; if you fly alone you pocket the saving on your single seat.

5. What a 2-4-1 really costs you

The biggest misunderstanding about the companion voucher is that the flights are “free”. They are not. You still spend Avios for one passenger, and you still pay the full taxes, fees and carrier-imposed surcharges for both people. On BA long-haul premium cabins those surcharges can run to several hundred pounds per person, so the real question is always whether the Avios saved outweigh the cash outlay.

Because the cash surcharges are identical with or without a voucher, the voucher’s value is entirely in the Avios you save. That is exactly why it pays to deploy it on the most Avios-hungry redemptions — long-haul Club World and First — rather than a cheap short-haul hop.

6. Cabins, seats and the availability trap

The number-one reason people fail to use their voucher is reward-seat availability. A voucher is useless if there are no reward seats on the flights you want. BA guarantees a minimum number of reward seats per flight and releases them up to 355 days ahead, so the golden rule is to book early — as close to the 355-day mark as you can.

The Premium Plus card has a decisive edge here: when you search with the “use a voucher” option selected, it reveals additional Club World reward seats that are invisible to members without a voucher. On popular routes that hidden availability can be the difference between a dream trip and a wasted voucher.

7. Expiry and validity rules

Vouchers do expire, and the clock starts the moment one appears in your account — not when you spend it. A free-card voucher lasts 12 months; a Premium Plus voucher lasts 24. The rule that catches people out is what “using it in time” actually means.

• Outbound before expiry: You only need to take the outbound flight before the voucher expires. The return leg can fall after the expiry date, as long as it is booked on the same itinerary.
• Cancellations return the voucher: Cancel a voucher booking more than 24 hours before departure and the voucher comes back — but with its original expiry date, which does not reset.
• Extensions are rare: Vouchers are generally non-extendable. BA may grant a three-month extension only in documented exceptional circumstances such as serious illness or bereavement.

8. Where the voucher shines brightest

Since the voucher’s entire value is in the Avios it saves, the best uses are the redemptions that cost the most Avios per seat. These are the trips savvy collectors save their vouchers for.

• Long-haul Club World: The classic sweet spot — business-class returns to the US, Middle East or Asia save the most Avios of any redemption.
• First class: Only possible with a Premium Plus voucher, and the single biggest Avios saving BA offers.
• Peak-date family trips: When cash fares spike over school holidays, a 2-4-1 in any cabin is exceptional value.
• Booking through Iberia: Some routes carry lower surcharges via Iberia, stretching the cash side of your voucher trip further.
