1. What are Avios, really?

Avios is the reward currency used by British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Qatar Airways, as well as by dozens of hotel, shopping and transfer partners. You can view them as a type of travel money which you earn from ordinary activities and then use to pay for flights, upgrades to cabin class, hotel bookings and so on. Although one Avios does not have a set cash value, the key point is in how skillfully you redeem them, and that is precisely what this website is designed to help you with.

The single most important idea for a beginner is that Avios are a separate currency from tier points. Avios buy you rewards; tier points buy you status. 2. How beginners actually earn Avios

The idea is that you need to fly a lot in order to accumulate a significant number of Avios; in fact, most UK-based collectors get the vast majority of their Avios without flying at all, relying instead on spending with credit cards, using shopping portals and taking advantage of the once-a-year welcome bonus. Flying is the final touch, not the main element. The following are the four options that make a difference, listed in order of their impact on an average household.

3. Avios vs tier points — the crucial difference

This is the concept that trips up almost every newcomer. British Airways runs two entirely separate scoreboards. Avios are your spendable rewards. Tier points decide your status — Bronze, Silver or Gold — and the lounge access, priority boarding and free seat selection that come with it. You cannot buy status with Avios, and you cannot pay for a reward flight with tier points.

4. How much is an Avios worth?

There is no official exchange rate — the value you get depends entirely on how you redeem. As a working rule of thumb, aim for at least 1 penny per Avios, treat 1.5p as good, and anything above 2p as an excellent redemption. Where you fall on that scale is the difference between Avios being genuinely valuable and being barely worth collecting.

The pattern is clear: Avios shine when spent on premium-cabin flights and fade fast on non-flight redemptions. Collect them, then hold out for a flight reward.

5. The best ways to spend your Avios

Once you understand valuation, the “sweet spots” become obvious. These are the redemptions that reliably return well above a penny per Avios and where beginners get the most memorable trips for the fewest points.

• Short-haul reward flights: Europe in economy is cheap in Avios and avoids eye-watering peak cash fares — ideal first redemption.
• Premium-cabin long-haul: Business and First rewards are where Avios deliver 2p+ of value. The dream redemption for most collectors.
• Cabin upgrades: Use Avios to lift a paid economy ticket into a better cabin — often superb value on long routes.
• Booking through Iberia or Qatar: Sister programmes sometimes price the same seat for fewer Avios or lower surcharges.

A quick warning: watch the cash surcharges (“taxes, fees and carrier charges”) on reward flights, especially those departing the UK. 6. Do Avios expire?

Yes — but they are easy to keep alive. Your Avios stay valid as long as your account shows some qualifying activity at least once every 36 months. Crucially, “activity” does not mean flying: earning or spending even a single Avios resets the clock.

If you hold an Avios-earning credit card and use it even occasionally, your balance will effectively never expire.
