For years the smart move for an Avios-funded business-class trip was to fly Qatar Airways rather than British Airways — a better seat, and a fraction of the cash surcharge. In September 2024 Qatar changed its fee model, so the maths is different now. It is still often worth it, but you need to price it properly.

Two things made Qatar Airways the classic Avios redemption for premium travellers. First, the Qsuite business-class product — a private, door-equipped suite widely rated above British Airways Club World. Second, and crucially, Qatar historically levied a much lower carrier surcharge than BA, so the cash bill was a fraction of a comparable BA redemption.
Because Qatar Airways is an Avios partner, you could spend your British Airways Avios on it — better seat, lower cash. That combination is what earned it “no surcharge” folklore, even though small taxes always applied.
In September 2024 Qatar Airways replaced its old flat, per-sector surcharge with a distance-based redemption fee. The effect was uneven:
The “no surcharge” era is over. Qatar is no longer free of cash fees on Avios bookings — but on many routes the redemption fee still undercuts BA’s carrier surcharge, so it remains competitive.
Because the fee is distance-based, there is no single number. As a rough guide for 2026:

For premium long-haul, Qatar Airways on Avios usually remains a strong choice: a superior seat, and cash fees that still tend to beat British Airways’ carrier surcharge on comparable routes. The caveats are real, though — the longest routes are now pricier, and award availability can be scarce.
The rule of thumb: if you can find Qsuite space on your dates, price it against the BA alternative. More often than not the cash is lower and the experience is better — just do not assume it is free.
