1. How to use the calculator

A reward flight is never just “free with points”. Its true cost is the cash you still pay plus the value of the Avios you hand over. This calculator turns both into a single figure so you can compare it honestly against the cash fare. Enter four things:

  • Avios required — the points BA is asking for the seat.
  • Taxes, fees and surcharges — the cash portion you pay on top of the Avios.
  • Your Avios value — what you reckon one Avios is worth to you, in pence. A cautious baseline is 1.0p.
  • The cash fare — what the same flight costs to buy outright.

Not sure what to put for your Avios value? Most people should use somewhere between 0.8p and 1.2p. Our how much are Avios worth guide explains how to set your own personal benchmark.

2. What the results mean

  • Effective cost — the cash you pay plus the notional value of the Avios spent. This is the real price of the reward seat.
  • Value per Avios — the cash you save (the fare minus the fees you pay anyway) divided by the Avios spent. This is the honest measure of how hard your points are working.
  • Saving vs cash — how much better (or worse) off you are versus simply buying the cash fare, at your chosen Avios value.

The single most useful number is value per Avios. As a rough guide, above 1.3p is strong, around 0.8p to 1.3p is the normal sweet spot, and below 0.8p means your points are being spent lightly — often a sign to pay cash instead.

3. A worked example

Say a Club World return to New York needs 176,000 Avios plus £499 in taxes and fees, and the cash fare for the same flights is £3,200. The cash you actually save is £3,200 − £499 = £2,701. Divide that by 176,000 Avios and you are getting about 1.53p per Avios — a strong premium-cabin redemption. Now try the same maths on a £120 short-haul economy hop and you will usually see why those are far more marginal.

All figures here are illustrative. Always plug in the live Avios price, the exact taxes and fees BA quotes, and the real cash fare on the day — those move constantly.

4. Getting the most from every redemption

  • Choose off-peak dates — the same seat costs fewer Avios, lifting your value per Avios straight away.
  • Favour premium long-haul, where cash fares are highest and Avios stretch furthest.
  • Watch the surcharge — a heavy carrier surcharge can quietly wreck an otherwise good redemption.
  • Compare partner airlines — some charge far less in fees for a similar seat.

To dig deeper, see how the cash portion is built up in our taxes and fees explainer, check whether your dates are peak or off-peak, and estimate the surcharge itself with our carrier surcharge calculator.
