The “best” Avios card is the one that matches your spending and travel plans. This guide ranks the leading UK options, explains the two different ways a card can feed your Avios balance, and gives you a clear rule for choosing. Every figure is checked against the providers’ published terms.

1. The quick picks

Best for beginners: the fee-free British Airways American Express — earn Avios directly with no annual fee.
Best for a 2-4-1 voucher: the BA Premium Plus — an any-cabin companion voucher at £15,000 spend.
Best for flexibility: the Amex Preferred Rewards Gold — transferable points, free for the first year.
Best where Amex is refused: the Barclaycard Avios Plus — a Mastercard at 1.5 Avios per £1 with no FX fees.

BA American Express (free). Earns Avios directly with no fee, and can unlock an economy companion voucher at £15,000 spend. The obvious first card for most people.
BA Premium Plus. Companion voucher usable in ANY cabin at £15,000 spend, valid 24 months. The premium-cabin collector’s card — the voucher can dwarf the fee.
Barclaycard Avios Plus (Mastercard). Mastercard acceptance, no foreign-transaction fees and a cabin-upgrade voucher at £10,000 spend. Ideal where Amex is refused or for spending abroad.
Barclaycard Avios (free). A no-fee Mastercard that earns Avios directly — useful as a backup where Amex is not taken, without the monthly fee of the Plus version.
Amex Preferred Rewards Gold. Earns transferable Membership Rewards (1:1 to Avios), four lounge passes, a Deliveroo credit and a big welcome bonus. Fee-free for the first year.
Amex Platinum. Unlimited lounge access, wide travel insurance and hotel status. Held for the perks, not the earn rate — justified only by heavy travel.

Fees, earn rates and welcome bonuses change frequently — always confirm the current terms on the provider’s own site before applying. This is general information, not financial advice.

3. Two ways a card earns Avios

Co-branded cards (the BA Amex cards and the Barclaycard Avios cards) earn Avios directly and can unlock a companion or upgrade voucher. Membership Rewards cards (Amex Gold, Platinum) earn a flexible currency you transfer to Avios at 1:1 — and to other airline and hotel partners if your plans change.

If you are not yet certain Avios is your programme, a Membership Rewards card keeps your options open — only the co-branded BA cards give a British Airways companion voucher.

4. How to choose in one minute

Spend under £15,000 a year? Skip the fees. The free BA Amex or free Barclaycard Avios earns Avios at no cost.
Can hit £15,000 and fly premium? The BA Premium Plus companion voucher is the single most valuable perk in UK Avios.
Want a big head start? The Amex Gold welcome bonus banks a large chunk of Avios in year one, fee-free.
Spend a lot abroad? The Barclaycard Avios Plus charges no foreign-transaction fees, unlike the Amex cards’ 2.99%.

5. Holding more than one card

Serious collectors rarely stop at one. A popular set-up is an Amex Membership Rewards card for everyday spend, a co-branded BA Amex for the companion voucher, and a Barclaycard for the shops that refuse Amex. There is no rule against holding several — just watch that Amex welcome bonuses are once per card per lifetime, and only carry fees for benefits you will genuinely use.

The companion-voucher cards

If a 2-4-1 voucher is your goal, these are the two cards that earn one.
