Your Avios can fly on far more than British Airways. Here is how to find partner reward seats, which book online, and how to pay the lowest surcharges for the very same seat.
Some of the best Avios redemptions are not on BA at all — Qatar’s Qsuite, Japan Airlines business class, American Airlines across the Atlantic. But partner bookings have their own rules, and getting them wrong can cost you hundreds in surcharges or a fruitless phone call.

Avios is not a British Airways-only currency. The same points sit in a shared family of programmes — British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair — and can move between them 1:1, usually within minutes. On top of that, BA Avios can book reward seats on a wide range of oneworld and partner airlines, from American Airlines to Japan Airlines.
The catch is that not every partner seat can be booked the same way. Some appear in online search; others must be booked by phone. Knowing which is which is the difference between a smooth redemption and a wasted evening.
Transfers between Avios programmes are one-way and effectively irreversible. Confirm the seat and the price in your target programme before you move any points across.
Each Avios programme has its own website with its own list of partners it can book online. Anything outside that list generally means a phone call or live chat:
The classic technique: search availability somewhere it displays clearly — for example the Alaska or American website for AA seats — then call your Avios programme with the exact flights and dates to book them.
Here is the part most people miss: because each Avios programme sets its own reward pricing and its own taxes and surcharges, the identical partner seat can cost markedly different amounts depending on which programme you book through.
For example, a transatlantic seat booked through Iberia can carry far lower carrier surcharges than the same journey through British Airways. Qatar Airways switched to a distance-based reward chart, which changed the maths on long routes. And in 2026 Finnair devalued its American, Alaska and Hawaiian awards.
